Payments FAQ

What is PayShap and how does it work for businesses in South Africa?+
PayShap is South Africa's real-time low-value payment rail operated by PayInc (BankservAfrica) under SARB oversight, launched in April 2023. It allows individuals and businesses to send instant interbank payments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Payments are initiated using a ShapID — typically a registered cellphone number — or a bank account number and branch code. For businesses, PayShap enables instant supplier payments, same-day refunds to customers, real-time salary advances, and rapid settlement of urgent invoices. All major South African banks including Absa, FNB, Nedbank, Standard Bank, and Capitec support PayShap.
What is Request to Pay (RTP) and how does it differ from a regular EFT?+
Request to Pay (RTP) is a message-based pull-payment standard operated by PayInc (BankservAfrica). Instead of a business pushing a debit instruction (EFT), it sends a payment request message to the payer's banking app. The payer reviews the request — which includes the amount, beneficiary, and reference — and approves payment with a single tap. This eliminates mismatched payment references, reduces disputed transactions, and gives the payer visibility and control. RTP is particularly useful for B2B invoice collection, utility bills, and any scenario where manual EFT reference errors are costly.
What is an eWallet payment and who can receive one in South Africa?+
eWallet payments allow businesses to send money directly to a recipient's cellphone number, regardless of whether they have a traditional bank account. The recipient receives an SMS with a voucher or PIN to access the funds — typically at an ATM, retail outlet, or via mobile app. FNB eWallet is the most widely known product in South Africa, but several banks and fintech providers offer similar cellphone-based wallet disbursements. eWallet payments are commonly used for emergency disbursements, social grants, wage payments to casual workers, and supplier payments to micro-businesses that are unbanked.
Which South African banks support PayShap in 2026?+
PayShap is supported by all major South African retail banks as at 2026, including Absa, FNB, Nedbank, Standard Bank, Capitec, Discovery Bank, Investec, and TymeBank. To use PayShap, both the sender and recipient must have accounts at participating banks. The ShapID is registered by each bank customer on their own banking app or platform. Transaction limits vary by bank, but SARB has set a maximum single-transaction limit to position PayShap as a low-to-mid-value instant payment rail, complementary to RTGS for high-value transactions.
