Banking Regulation in South Africa
South African banks are regulated by the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) through its Prudential Authority. Consumer banking conduct is overseen by the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA). Credit agreements — including credit cards and overdrafts — are governed by the National Credit Act (NCA), enforced by the National Credit Regulator (NCR). If you have a dispute with your bank, the Banking Ombud provides free, independent resolution for retail customers. A transmission account (also called a current or cheque account) is the standard account used for everyday payments. Your credit limit on a credit card or overdraft is determined by your bank based on an NCA affordability assessment.
