Truck insurance covers accidental damage, theft, fire, third-party liability, and in some policies, goods-in-transit and driver personal accident cover. Heavy commercial vehicle insurance is specialist cover distinct from personal or standard commercial vehicle insurance due to higher values and higher liability risk.

Insurers cover a wide range of trucks including: rigid trucks, articulated trucks (semis and tippers), flatbed trucks, refrigerated trucks, crane trucks, concrete mixers, tow trucks, and light commercial delivery trucks. Each type is assessed differently for risk and premium purposes.

Not by default. Truck insurance covers the vehicle itself. Goods-in-transit insurance (GIT) is a separate product covering the cargo in the truck. If you haul client goods, your contract may require GIT cover. These can often be combined into one commercial transport policy.

Premiums are based on: truck GVM (gross vehicle mass), age and value of the truck, type of cargo hauled, routes travelled (urban vs long-distance), driver age and PDP licence status, annual mileage, and claims history. High-value trucks and long-distance routes attract higher premiums.
